In a vibrant display of talent and collaboration, high school students from around Michigan's Upper Peninsula gathered at the Michigan Regional Council of Carpenters & Millwrights Training Center in Negaunee Township for the annual U.P. Construction/Welding Skills Challenge. Ryan Stern, a Field Representative for the Upper Peninsula Office of the Michigan Building and Construction Trades Council, emphasized the importance of safety, stating, "A safety representative is present to ensure all students work safely, advising them on more secure practices when necessary."

Beyond the wood shed construction, students engaged in various skill-building activities, including operating heavy machinery like excavators and cranes. Participants also took part in electrical tasks to add a comprehensive aspect to their learning experience. Connor, a Manistique High School student, expressed his enthusiasm, saying, "The experience of seeing all the things you can do here, and the people you meet, is amazing. Building something new with friends makes it even better." Lola, a student from Ishpeming High School, shared her excitement about her program, stating, "You can pretty much do what you love, and they teach you how to do it the proper way." Preparing for the future, Lola plans to further her education in Missouri and is eager to embrace opportunities that align with her passion for welding.
