Honoring Excellence: Michigan Construction Hall of Fame Celebrates Industry Pioneers
On December 4, 2025, Ferris State University proudly welcomed four extraordinary leaders into the Michigan Construction Hall of Fame, embodying decades of dedication, innovation, and commitment to shaping the construction landscape in Michigan. The 2025 inductees—James Cole, Mary and John Henry, and Ron Staley—were recognized during a formal ceremony held at the esteemed Granger Center for Construction and HVACR.
This annual tribute shines a spotlight on professionals whose careers exemplify technical mastery, managerial expertise, and a profound commitment to serving both the construction community and the public. Each honoree contributed uniquely to various aspects of construction, from historic preservation and civil engineering to fostering multigenerational family businesses.
James Cole: Craftsmanship and Mentorship
James Cole's impressive journey spans over 50 years, beginning at just ten years old when he first dabbled in construction work. His professional career took off in 1967 with Taylor and Gaskin, Inc. Through hard work and a commitment to education, he ascended through various roles to become the executive vice president and part-owner at A J Etkin Construction Co. Later, he took on the pivotal role of president at L.S. Brinker Construction Management, where he mentored the next generation of builders, demonstrating that mentorship is as crucial as any technical skill.
Cole emphasizes, "Mentoring allowed me to share my lessons and support L.S. Brinker's growth while preserving its legacy." Beyond his professional commitments, he extensively volunteers with organizations, asserting that the importance of giving back extends well beyond the construction site.
The Henrys: A Family Legacy
John and Mary Henry transformed John Henry Excavating, Inc. into a cornerstone of northern Michigan's civil construction. John, with a civil engineering degree from Northern Michigan University, launched the company utilizing his father's legacy in the industry. Mary complemented John by managing finances and imparting operational expertise that expanded the business. The firm has since thrived under the leadership of their son and daughter-in-law, ensuring the family's dedication to the business carries on through their grandchildren.
The family’s community involvement reinforces their commitment, from local planning boards to various civic organizations, embodying the belief that construction is about more than building; it's about enhancing community life.
Ron Staley: A Champion of Preservation
Ron Staley's illustrious career focuses on restoring America’s historic structures, a pursuit that reflects deep respect for architectural heritage. With degrees in Civil Engineering Technology and Business Administration from Michigan Technological University, he began his career at Bechtel Power Corporation before joining The Christman Company. Staley's preservation efforts saw him contribute to numerous landmark projects including the restoration of the Michigan Central Station—a monumental undertaking that involved a 344 million dollar investment, completed in collaboration with Ford Motor Company.
As a Fellow of the Association for Preservation Technology International, his contributions extend far beyond the local landscape into international restoration work, showcasing how construction can connect cultures through history.
A Legacy of Innovation and Community Impact
The Michigan Construction Hall of Fame is not merely a tribute but a teaching tool that highlights the transformative impact of construction on communities. This year's inductees epitomize how the construction industry not only shapes physical spaces but also fosters relationships and stewards heritage.
Recognizing achievements such as Cole’s mentorship, the Henry family's enduring legacy, and Staley's historic preservation underscores a vital principle: construction is a multifaceted profession where every contribution matters. The Hall of Fame champions excellence within the industry, encouraging upcoming generations to pursue careers and initiatives that uphold these values.
