Bringing Warmth and Connection to Seniors
An annual event aimed at providing a nutritious and freshly prepared holiday meal is making its way back to West Michigan this December. AgeWell Services of West Michigan has partnered with the DTE Energy Foundation and other support organizations to host this heartwarming event for adults 60 and older across Oceana, Muskegon, and Ottawa counties.
Scheduled for December 17, this gathering is about more than just food. "Holiday meals are about more than food. They are about community," said Kris VanderStelt, executive director of AgeWell Services. The meal serves as a platform for seniors to experience warmth, joy, and a sense of belonging during a season that can often feel isolating.
Meal Details and Locations
Those interested in attending must call 2-1-1 to make reservations, which are now closed as of December 5. The free meal will take place at 10 lunch and activity centers within the region. Despite some venues reaching their capacity quickly, the Driftwood Café remains open for reservations.
The meal’s festive menu includes treats such as cranberry brie-stuffed chicken breast, smashed red skin potatoes with gravy, vibrant vegetables, a fresh Caesar salad, and a delicious peanut butter pie — all designed to delight the taste buds of attendees.
The Importance of Community in Difficult Times
For many seniors, this holiday meal transcends the notion of simply sharing a meal. It represents moments of connection, companionship, and festive cheer. Such gatherings can significantly reduce the feelings of loneliness that often plague older adults, particularly during the holiday season.
“We are deeply grateful for partners who help ensure no senior feels forgotten,” VanderStelt continued, emphasizing the importance of community involvement in making this event a success.
Support the Cause
Contributions from the DTE Energy Foundation, along with the Muskegon County Senior Millage and Senior Resources of West Michigan, have made it possible for over 1,400 seniors to enjoy a holiday meal. However, the need for donations is ongoing to expand this initiative to reach even more individuals in future years.
This effort not only helps provide food but also fosters a nurturing environment of support and appreciation for our aging community members. If you’re looking to give back this season, consider donating or volunteering at local community events like this.
Connecting Through Food
As the holiday season approaches, numerous food banks and pantries are gearing up to offer assistance. Similar to AgeWell’s initiative, many food banks are a core part of the local community, providing free groceries and holiday meal programs designed to help those in need celebrate the season. By looking for local food banks, residents can ensure their neighbors are supported and connected to essential resources.
The importance of food access extends beyond merely filling plates; it serves as a bridge to connect individuals and foster community spirit. For seniors, like those attending the upcoming holiday meal, having a shared experience can significantly uplift their spirits.
Final Thoughts
Holiday meals are a powerful reminder of the importance of community engagement and support for older adults. Every gathered plate and shared smile at the AgeWell Services event can help combat isolation and invigorate the sense of belonging among seniors in West Michigan. Let’s keep this spirit alive not just during the holidays but year-round.
