Grant Transforms Trauma Therapy in Michigan
You’re Worth It Counseling, a telehealth-based therapy service, has been awarded a $2,990 small business grant to expand its trauma therapy services across Michigan. This funding comes from the Eastern Michigan Small Business Network and aims to increase access to eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) therapy, providing relief for individuals grappling with trauma.
Supporting Trauma Recovery Through EMDR
Founded by licensed master social worker Cara Bickel, You’re Worth It Counseling specializes in addressing relational trauma, especially issues stemming from narcissistic abuse and emotionally immature parenting. The newly acquired grant will allow the practice to hire and train two additional therapists, which is crucial for reducing client wait times and expanding service delivery. Bickel emphasized, "Without the grant, the hiring and training would have been delayed at least a year or two."
Michigan Small Business Grant Program: A Competitive Landscape
The 2026 Small Business Grant program saw a strong response, with over 400 applications submitted from various businesses in Region 6, which encompasses Shiawassee, Lapeer, Tuscola, Huron, Sanilac, and St. Clair counties. This year, a total of $37,141 was distributed to six businesses, highlighting the demand for such initiatives in the region. As noted by Samantha Schnettler, executive director of the Huron County Economic Development Corporation, grant recipients were chosen through a competitive process that prioritized community impact and potential for growth.
Bridging Gaps in Trauma Care Access
In discussions surrounding mental health accessibility, it’s vital to address populations traditionally underserved in psychological care. Bickel noted the unique challenges faced by men in accessing trauma services, often leaving them with limited options for specialized support. By expanding her practice’s offerings, she hopes to create a more inclusive environment where every individual can find the help they need.
The Vital Role of Support Networks
Bickel has benefited significantly from guidance provided by the Michigan Small Business Development Center through the Eastern Michigan Small Business Network Cohort. The emotional support and logistical assistance she received has been pivotal in her journey to expanding her practice. "The emotional support and encouragement from my individual counselor made all the difference," Bickel stated.
Looking Ahead: The Future of Trauma Therapy in Michigan
With the rising demand for mental health services, especially during trying times, Bickel's vision for You’re Worth It Counseling aligns well with current trends in healthcare. The use of telehealth allows for flexibility and reach, making it easier for clients throughout Michigan to access trauma-focused therapy without the barriers of travel or time constraints.
As the expansion of services takes place, it is expected that the integration of different therapeutic approaches will further enhance client experiences and outcomes. By adopting diverse therapeutic methods and ensuring therapists receive necessary training, including for EMDR therapy, Bickel is poised to make a significant impact on the mental wellness landscape of Michigan.
