From a Coffee Cart to a Community Hub
In Davison Township, Michigan, a young couple is on the verge of launching Beny’s Coffee, a cozy coffee shop meant to serve as a community gathering spot. Belle and Henry Dearing, who have known each other since sixth grade and started dating in high school, are drawing on their shared love for coffee and community to turn their dream into reality.
Building a Dream with Purpose
At just 22 years old, Belle has a vision that extends beyond simply serving coffee. "I want to create a place of community for people using a coffee shop and show people love," she explained. In her high school journal, she expressed her passion for serving others and always believed that a coffee shop could be a tool for ministry, providing meaningful connections among people.
The couple’s journey began in earnest when Belle worked at a coffee shop after graduating from Faith Baptist School, eager to learn all there was about the industry. Over the years, they visited numerous cafes, soaking in the atmosphere and jotting down ideas that inspired them. "It became a part of our travels together," Henry recalled. "We always knew we would open a coffee shop someday." This mutual vision, combined with their experiences in various coffee environments, ignited their obsession with the coffee shop culture and community focus.
Lessons Learned Along the Way
In preparation for opening Beny’s Coffee, Belle consulted with established coffee shop owners, gaining insights into their successes and failures. Though they initially didn’t consider themselves coffee connoisseurs, their knowledge and appreciation have flourished over time. "Now we can’t get enough of it," she laughed, emphasizing their commitment to continually learn and adapt.
Initially, they operated a coffee cart at local events, which allowed them to test their menu and connect with customers. Their offerings included mocha, caramel, and vanilla lattes, and their plan for the new storefront includes sourcing high-quality ingredients such as house-made syrups and specialty baked goods.
Creating an Inviting Space for Everyone
When choosing a location for the brick-and-mortar shop, they prioritized a space that felt welcoming and had good visibility. They settled on a site on Irish Road, where community engagement seemed ripe for a local coffee shop. Henry said, "We think we can add something here," highlighting the strong community ties they desire to cultivate through their business.
To create a warm and inviting environment, Belle envisions a design featuring blue and neutral colors, plenty of natural light, and a layout that encourages relaxation and conversation. The shop will accommodate approximately 30 patrons, offering a comfortable area with couches and communal tables.
A Coffee Shop with Heart
Belle stated that their faith plays a fundamental role in their business philosophy, motivating them to treat each customer with compassion—regardless of their own beliefs. She reinforced that while they wouldn’t impose their faith on anyone else, it directly influences their commitment to serve the community.
"Our relationship with God serves as the backbone of everything we do," Henry remarked. Their journey is not just a business venture; it's about fulfilling a purpose that resonates deeply with their values.
Looking Forward
As Beny’s Coffee prepares to open, Belle and Henry express excitement and hope for the future, eager to share their love for coffee and their passion for building community. They remain committed to their original vision, aspiring to create a welcoming space where the residents of Davison Township can gather, connect, and enjoy quality coffee.
With the Dearing's inspiring journey and focus on community engagement, Beny’s Coffee promises to be a cherished addition to the local landscape.
