A Historic Day for Eastern Michigan Rowing
On May 16, 2026, Eastern Michigan University (EMU) made history as it hosted the inaugural Mid-American Conference (MAC) Women’s Rowing Championship at the EMU Rowing Course on Ford Lake. This groundbreaking event brought together a host of competitive programs, showcasing not only the depth of talent in collegiate rowing but also EMU's emergence as a powerhouse in the sport.
Record-Breaking Performance by the Third Varsity Eight
The standout performance of the day came from the EMU Third Varsity Eight (3V8+), which secured a silver medal with a stellar time of 6:58.8. This achievement was particularly significant as it not only clinched a podium finish but also shattered the previous school record by over 15 seconds. Previously, the 3V8+ team had marked a time of 7:14.20 at the Mason Invite in 2019. The crew's tenacity was evident as they surged past Temple University, keeping the pressure on the eventual champions, the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
A Platform for Individual Excellence
While the 3V8+ took the spotlight, their success was interlaced with individual achievements as junior rowers Abbi Lauth and Bryah Moriarty were named to the Second-Team All-MAC. This recognition highlights not only their hard work but underscores the rising talent within EMU's rowing program. With a total of 14 points, EMU finished fifth in the standings, tying their best-ever score at a conference championship while placing ahead of University of Toledo. The day belonged to UMass, which dominated the event, claiming three out of the four categories.
Weathering the Storm
The championship was not without its hurdles, as inclement weather, including rain and lightning, resulted in delays of nearly three hours. Yet, the EMU athletes displayed remarkable composure during the extended wait. Their ability to remain focused amidst unpredictable conditions was reflected in their competitive performances, demonstrating resilience that often characterizes successful sports teams.
Competitive Field and Championship Results
Alongside the impressive run of the 3V8+, the EMU Rowing program had strong performances from other teams. The Second Varsity Eight (2V8+) secured fourth place with a time of 7:00.9, and the First Varsity Eight (1V8+) finished fifth in a fiercely contested final with a time of 6:56.7. Additionally, the First Varsity Four (1V4+) also came in fifth with a time of 7:58.2. This consistency in performance across all divisions illustrated EMU's growing prowess in collegiate rowing.
Looking Ahead: The Future of EMU Rowing
As Eastern Michigan reflects on this historic championship, the experience gained from competing against strong conference rivals will undoubtedly serve as a foundation for future success. The commitment to excellence and resilience witnessed this past weekend points to a bright future for EMU Rowing. With increasing recognition and support, the Eagles aim to build on this momentum in the seasons to come.
