Celebrating Community Impact in Southwest Michigan
This past week, Lake Michigan College's Mendel Center became a hub of celebration as over 300 donors, volunteers, and community partners gathered to honor the extraordinary individuals and organizations making a difference in Southwest Michigan. The United Way of Southwest Michigan held its Annual Celebration, a night dedicated not just to recognizing those who give their time and resources, but to reminding everyone that community progress is a collective effort.
Shining a Light on Volunteerism
United Way President & CEO Anna Murphy opened the evening with an inspiring message anchored in the poignant story of Tyrone, a local resident whose transformative journey was supported by key partners like Michigan Works! Berrien Cass Van Buren and New Heights Auto Service. “The future of Southwest Michigan isn’t something that happens to us,” she emphasized. “It’s something we cultivate when we show up with our strengths.” This philosophy underscored the entire celebration, reinforcing the narrative that behind every award is a story of community collaboration and personal fortitude.
Honoring Exemplary Leaders
The night’s first big highlight was the presentation of the Margaret B. Upton Volunteer Leadership Award to Kathy Craig. Recognized for her remarkable contributions to organizations such as New Heights CCDA and Habitat for Humanity, Craig's legacy is a testament to relentless community service. The award included a $5,000 contribution to a charity of her choice, showcasing how impactful individual efforts can resonate beyond personal accolades.
In a similar vein, Roseann Marchetti was honored with the Judge Susan L. Dobrich Volunteer Leadership Award for her extensive civic involvement, from local charities to government initiatives. These awards not only celebrate the individuals but also highlight the organizations and efforts that are pivotal to community resilience.
A New Tradition: Volunteer United Excellence in Service Award
This year's celebration introduced an exciting new honor: the Volunteer United Excellence in Service Award. The inaugural recipient, Linda Thomson, was recognized posthumously for her dedicated service through United Way’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program. Her son, Kyle, accepted the award on her behalf, symbolizing the lasting impact of her nearly 30 years of volunteer work. In her time, Thomson prepared over 125 tax returns each year, amassing more than 200 volunteer hours annually helped return excess of $150,000 to her clients.
Engaging Local Businesses in Philanthropy
Recognizing that businesses play an essential role in community support, the evening also highlighted various corporate contributions. Gast Manufacturing received the Whirlpool Community Commitment Award for their commendable efforts in organizing five mobile food pantries throughout the year, aiding approximately 10,000 individuals. The focus on corporate responsibility shines a light on how local businesses can incorporate philanthropy into their operational ethos.
Further, the United Federal Credit Union David J. Weichhand Award was presented to the Logan Autism Learning Center, exemplifying the critical role of educational and health services in the nonprofit sector. Such recognitions not only celebrate achievement but also serve as an appeal for other businesses to engage in meaningful community initiatives.
Beyond Recognition: Creating Lasting Change
As the evening unfolded, it became evident that the United Way of Southwest Michigan is not merely an organization dedicated to charity but a movement that inspires its community. The events highlighted how everyone—from volunteers to businesses—has a crucial part to play in building a better future.
