Since its inception in 2015, the Michigan Good Food Fund has transformed the landscape for more than 300 businesses, offering essential financing and personalized business assistance. This latest round of Seed Awards illustrates the program's ongoing commitment to identifying and nurturing community-rooted enterprises that enhance the state's food security.

One notable recipient of this funding is Growing Hope, a nonprofit based in Ypsilanti dedicated to food sovereignty and local entrepreneurship. Executive Director Julius Buzzard expressed the significance of this award: “This came at a pivotal moment for us.” By expanding their shared-use kitchen and entrepreneurial support programs, they are positioned to drive meaningful change in their community.
The Seed Award will facilitate the renovation of an old bank building into an accelerator kitchen that will serve as an essential transitional space for food entrepreneurs preparing to establish their brick-and-mortar businesses. Buzzard notes, “Community is built when people come together around food,” underscoring the intrinsic connection between food, culture, and entrepreneurship.
Addressing Food Deserts Across Michigan
Funding is also directed toward resolving the pressing issue of food deserts. For instance, Whispering Wild Market Farm located in Michigan's Upper Peninsula is utilizing its grant to build a farm store, directly addressing the geographical challenges residents face regarding food accessibility. Owner Gina Kerr stated, “Our farm has become a satellite for fresh produce in an area with few grocery options,” demonstrating the crucial role these businesses play in ensuring food availability.
The Seed Awards are specifically designed to alleviate the burdens small farms endure, thus enhancing their operational efficiency and community impact. Kerr explained, “This will help us expand our production and increase profitability.” Their new facilities will not only make shopping easier for customers but also create jobs for local youth, further knitting the fabric of community support.

This recent round of funding highlights significant growth within Michigan's local food scene. The total distribution of $142,862 was awarded to businesses in Metro Detroit alone, with additional funds allocated to other regions across the state. Other recipient businesses include Dancing Crane Farm, In The Business of Food, and more, all of which contribute notably to food access and job creation.
